Poor frame rate in Deo, High frame rate in Media Player Classic

The GPU is not going 100% for 4K video.

I just beefed up my WiFi with an Intel AX210 WiFi 6e card. I tried using AirLink - no apparent difference than using the cable.

I turned on Media Streaming in Windows 10 (DLNA) and added my video folders to the library. Streams 5K and 8K videos are streaming smoothly with higher frame rates then either AirLink or Link when using DLNA in Deo VR.

Same with other VR video players that support DLNA. The App Labs one just added SMB support as well.

I'd say the bottle-neck culprit is the Oculus Link software at this point.

Maybe I'll play around with Plex. Or see how SMB works with the Apps Lab viewer and hope the others will add SMB support.

If you use DLNA to stream a video file directly to Quest, then yeah, the Link software is the problem. The reason it's not working smoothly, is the requirement of hardware HEVC encoding for Link software.
For regular videos, Plex + DeoVR is a good combination. Quest only need to decode the video then render it 3D natively, so the potential bottlenecks are much reduced.

DLNA works fine with Kodi, Plex or Windows Media Streaming.

The lack of support of other common video formats/containers and audio codecs is a deal breaker.

SMB seems to be the way to go for my uses. SMB2/3 runs natively on Windows 10 Pro and does need the resources that DLNA media servers require. DLNA support in competing apps tends to be buggy.

Deo VR does not support SMB and the addition of support doesn't seem likely any time soon.

The other alternative is to play the videos on a desktop player like MPC-HC or VLC and stream the desktop. But then you don't get 180/360 support and controlling the player can be clumsy.

Well I updated my WiFi Access Point and the headset is saying it has a solid 1200Mbps Up/download link. Since the headset decided to update to v38 I enabled AFI in the Oculus Debug tool. Did not help with lag/freeze/stuttering on 5K videos.

I installed another free player. It stutters but nowhere to the extent of DeoVR. CPU is only 30-40% and GPU is only 30-40% as well. Does not seem to be using the LAV codecs. But since GPU and video RAM uses goes up it appears it is using HEVC in the GPU. The details on the app show the last update was 10/05/2021 so maybe video apps built under an earlier Oculus SDK work more efficiently.

Hello there!
I'm struggling with playing 8k videos myself. I'm using Meta Quest 2 via Link connection, my PC GTX 1060 6Gb, i5-8400, 16RAM. Latest version of MPC, all LAV things are enabled. HEVC is installed. I'm also downloaded DeoVR 8.55 version and STILL have 40 fps max in DeoVR although it's smooth on MPC. GPU is >90%.
What problem could it be? Movies in 1920p or less are smooth but 7K-8K are not.
Will this problem be fixed if I buy RTX 3080?

You don't need to. Quest 2 itself can decode 8k video and play them smoothly. You just install DeoVR in Quest 2, use DLNA to find your video and play them. It will be better than using your GPU to decode, render in 3D then encode again. If you want to go this route, you do need better GPU than 1060 to do it.

Is it better to watch via Link connection or built-in DeoVR app in Quest 2 anyway? It seemed to me that resolution on PC is better while in Quest 2 it's more blurry

Your GPU cannot do regular 8k video in VR, let along encoding it and sending the signal to the headset at the same time.

Doing the DLNA is easy. Download Plex server from plex.tv and add your videos to its library, enable the DLNA in settings, and you are good to go.

The only thing you need to be aware is that every device connected to your wifi might also see your shared video files. So if your family members come to your home, disable the DLNA.

For some reason with DLNA connection my videos aren't downloading (3 white dots)
I just bought a new GPU (3080 10Gb) to try it out once again later...
But what's up with the quality difference in DeoVR apps in SteamVR and Quest 2? Does PC provide a sharp and not blurry video? Or it's the same quality?

Maybe you should set the Plex's DLNA's direct stream and direct play to true.
The quality should be the same. At least for the 5k videos I watched. There is someone in this forum had problems with airlink, saying the videos are stuttering with artifacts. If your rig works fine, then it's good for you. I will just keep using DLNA myself.

philpw99 I tried Airlink connection with DeoVR app, and still 45FPS in every video (no matter 8bit or 10bit). Could it be a bad GPU after all?

Airlink is rendering the picture you see by your GPU, then sent it over wifi to your Quest 2.
The limit of FPS is set by the Meta software, not by the player or GPU.
The fact that you can use Airlink to see something, means your GPU works just fine.
However, if you use the Meta store's DeoVR, and connect your PC with DLNA, the playback should be smoother. The Quest 2 might be struggling with 8k, but for 5k and 7k videos, they will be smooth.

Maybe I should set "unlimited FPS" somewhere in Quest 2 software? I've already set 120fps in experimental settings if it's even important

Like I said, other people found airlink to be problematic. So I don't really recommend using airlink, or even the USB link cable to watch those 8k videos. I think even you successfully do that, the quality is just the same.

philpw99 I'm using DLNA now thanks to your advice. I got 90 fps in every video (8-10 bit 4-8K),but not 120 fps like in Quest 2 DeoVR app. Why so?

120 fps is just an experimental setting for Quest 2. How stable and how much it improves the whole experience is still not clear.

The video itself is 60 fps. The gain from 90 fps to 120 fps with a 60 fps video should be very small.

DLNA or SMB is the way to go. Most of the players don't support SMB. I prefer SMB because I don't have to add third party software to my Windows computer. Microsoft's built in DLNA needs file indexing enabled which I avoid. There are security concerns with SMB but if you disable SMB 1 you should be ok.
