Unfortunatly the developers are quite stubborn when it comes to old versions. Like you and many others I have learned the hard way to take matters in my own hands and make backups before trying to update. I have even gone so far to get a second headset that I can use as a testbed, because I was fucking fed up with these almost always broken updates costing me so much time, this was a good investment.
