I am with DeoVR forum for several years. Never had I done any recommendation, except this time.
I am not affiliate with Asus in anyway. This is simply just my opinion after years of finding the perfect mobile router.
In the pass I had been searching for a mobile router that can serve my Quest headset so I can watch videos from USB hard drives. I am a frugal person so I don't want anything over $100.
It seems most router brands regarding the USB external sharing as just "an extra". They just make it work, but didn't put any effort to make it fast.
In the past a few routers disappointed me, especially a router from TP-Link.
Asus' routers have a reputation of being fast and reliable. I got their cheapest Wifi6 router ($69), and it was fast enough to serve my Quest 3 with 8k videos.
So when I stumbled across their new mobile router in Microcenter, I bought it right away. I figured if that's not faster than my current one ( Cudy TR1200 ), I can return it right away.
The model is ASUS RT-AX57 Go. It just came out recently.
The test result: Amazing !
Little did I know that this router came with DLNA support ! The SMB sharing speed is faster than my Cudy ( 7mb vs 14mb /s), but DLNA speed is really where is shines ! With DLNA protocol, it can server up to 70mb /s ! Nothing came close to this kind of speed before.
And most importantly, to play local videos in DeoVR, DLNA is a must have. With this Asus mobile router, DeoVR instantly finds it and the directory list loading is lightning fast ! All huge size SLR alpha videos, which was quite a struggle to play properly, become pierce of cake to watch.
Therefore, I think it's really necessary to give you this info for my fellow DeoVRers. If you are also looking for a mobile router to bring Quest 3 on the road, grab this router and you will be happy.
One thing to be aware though: this mobile router doesn't support using power bank as power supply. Only the 9v/2a power adapter can be used. So for the road trips, I still bring my trusted Cudy TR1200 along. If I want to watch a 4k movie in an airplane, use Cudy, but if I need to watch 8k videos, I need to find a power plug somewhere and use the Asus.
