I have an HP Reverb G2 and a fairly beefy GPU (AMD Radeon 5700xt). I am able to play downloaded videos up to 6k through the headset, but have problems with freeze frame on 7k or higher. The resolution for the Reverb is 2160x2160 or 4K per eye, so I assume that means I can run an 8k video. I downloaded the codec extension, but it didn't help. Are there settings that I am missing, or do I have to upgrade hardware?

Just my experience.
First you need to have LAV decoder installed. And you also need to set the decoder's hardware acceleration to "Cuvid (old)" (someone use DVXA2) . Then turn on the "DirectDraw" after you play the video.
When DirectDraw is enabled, you should see the LAV icons in the notification area (where the clock is). If not, you need to use something called "Codec Tweaking Tool" to fix it.
Once the LAV decoder is in effect, you should see improvement in the playback right away.
For 10bit 7k or 8k video, even LAV decoder is slow. Then you can turn off the directdraw after turning it on. Magically it will work. DeoVR will play the file smoothly.
