"I suspect the race to 5k, 6k, 7k, 8k is driven by studios having to compete and customers false belief that these resolutions can have any benefit on their typically 2.5k system. At the same time this unusable resolution pushes their/our systems to breaking point."
This is simply not true ... But you have to read a lot more about the VR headsets and their FOV and resolution to understand it . Its more complicated than you think ... I dont have time to explain it in details but check what is VR set PPD - Pixels per degree
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_virtual_reality_headsets
For example at FOV ~90 degrees , Quest 2 has about ~21PPD (Horizontal) per eye
and 8K VR180 (7680x3840 ) vid at default FOV 180 degrees has also ~21 PPD per eye !
So in short - there is an real benefit of these 8K vids even at the present generation of VR sets .
Interesting fact is the that human eye can recognize about 60 PPD ... So there is a lot more to be developed with the future
generations of VR sets and VR vids ... ;)
