  • Quest 2 Resolution & Frame rate?

On my Quest 2, I've been using DeoVR running on my PC through Virtual Desktop because the quality/resolution and frame rate is much better doing it that way. Is there any plans to update the Quest 2 app to higher resolution and frame rate so I don't need to use Virtual Desktop anymore?

If they do have plans you can expect to be waiting for months for a resolution rather than days or weeks

arvz Not sure what you mean by resolution. On Quest 2 the app plays up to 8k. And unless Virtual Desktop is capturing an 8k monitor, it's just the resolution of your monitor VD sends.

Tony I guess I just mean the UI in the quest 2 app version looks kinda jaggedy, like it's rendered at a lower resolution - vs what I see running deovr through virtual desktop where there's much less jagged edges

arvz oh yes. It's just to keep the filesize down on devices with limited storage. It's basically just a low res image. It has no bearing on the video quality in the app.

Tony I see, that's good to know. Frame rate is definitely lower though, I can notice very slight flickering in videos, I assume this is a current limitation on the Quest 2 - I know you can manually set the device to 90hz through side quest, I suppose this is the only way to get higher frame rate for now?

arvz The Oculus native app is currently 72Hz. On PC 90Hz should work without issue.

Unfortunately you can not achieve the PQ (picture quality) on DeoVR app for quest 2 that you can have on windows (steam) version with more powerful GPU. The XR2 GPU inside Quest 2 is not so powerful - even GTX 1060 is way more powerful then it . You can set 90Hz and larger texture size (increase resolution) via SideQuest and this will improve significantly the PQ in DeoVR app but using windows version and desktop GPU always will gives you better performance and PQ in the vids . You can set SuperSampling (SS) in SteamVR video settings too about 140% and beyond if you have really powerful GPU and this improves the PQ a lot too . You can also adjust the sharpness of the vids using windows version of DeoVR and still cant do this using oculus app deovr version . This is another big drawback for me . So Virtual Desktop is really better way to watch vids if you want maximum PQ and you have good GPU . Now i am in process of comparison of PQ in DeoVR between VD and AirLink and my first impressions of AirLink are very good - i think it gives even more sharp picture compared to VD ...
So you can try this way too 😉

Actually XR2 and Quest 2 can play 8k@90fps (Hz) . You dont need any link cables - you can use DeoVR app on the headset or VD or Airlink for steam version of DeoVR. The PQ is better using the steam version - tough .

Thanks for the information. If the XR2 supports 8K@90fps then do we just need to ask the DeoVR developer to enable 90 FPS in the Quest 2 app?

For 90hz you dont need to set anything its default setting .Actually with current DeoVR app you can play and watch 8K vids at 120fps (Hz) on Quest 2 .
              Just run this ADB command

              adb shell setprop debug.oculus.refreshRate 120

or you can use SideQuest to set 120hz.
