Very low framerates in 8K videos after latest update !!

I just updated steam deoVR to the latest version 9.02 . Before i could watch czechvr 8K videos at 1080Ti and Quest 2 at 90fps even at 140% SuperSampling . Now the framerate dropped to about 25-30fps ... This is a real disater 🙁Please check and fix this ASAP . I am using the windows (Steam) version of DeoVR trough VirtualDesktop. The 5K videos still play at 90fps .

same problem with a valve index + 2080ti. in the process of trying to reset codecs just in case something happened

Same here. All 8k videos drop to very low frame rates (25-30Hz) after update. 80-90Hz before. I do not use VD.

seems like media foundation is working for a lot less videos than it used to, but not sure if that's direct cause or just another problem

same videos that run terribly now on both media foundation and directshow (or not at all in media foundation) work just fine (hardware accelerated) in another video player I tried

edit: I tried an older version of DeoVR off the Steam forum (a few vers back) and it works perfectly fine with no frame drops

That's really odd, The steam version should also be 9.02
Can you check in-app, lower left corner?

If it's indeed v9.02 on Steam also, is it the VR driver? Oculus or SteamVR. That would make much more sense because of the Unity upgrade in v9.x

Tony 9.02, 9.2 or whatever it is the latest version on SteamVR has the playback issues; 8.3, the older version I downloaded does not. Something must have changed in the player to cause this because 8.3 works fine (the intermediate version I used before that also worked fine. there only seems to be a problem with this new version)

I can only speculate on causes (like maybe difference in version of one of the files in plugins dir is causing it) but don't have the technical know how to really troubleshoot

quidnunc That's odd. My Steam DeoVR version is v9.x
Do you have auto updates disabled perhaps?

I have the latest version. I think you're misunderstanding. The issue is with playback in the latest version. I was observing that older versions of DeoVR do not have the same playback problems.

I found that if i start DeoVR not from desktop shortcut but from "Games" menu section in VirtualDesktop then DeoVR works fine and there is no frame drops ... Actually it seems to starts without SteamVR loading in this way . Very strange indeed but its a kind of solution .

Can someone try this and confirm it ?

I don't know if it was DeoVR/Steam/Windows update but the bottom line is that DeoVR is unusable for 2 months now (while other players I tried works perfectly fine)

boboweb This option has been disabled for technical reasons, currently we have almost fixed it and this option should be back in next update. No need to upset Karloson ahead of time.
Not all tasks are solved as quickly and easily as posts on forum are written.

It's not just the performance of the app that's bad, the performance of the web player also sucks. The DelightXR web player always handles playback way better for me.

Yes this is very annoying Karlson ... But you can try to install older version of Steam DeoVR 8.55 it still works fine with all 8K vids. Otherwise you can try latest Quest2 (from oculus store) version of DeoVR it can handle 8K vids with about 120fps if you do not set the sharpness slider at the default render resolution (lower indeed compared with these you can get with more powerful PC GPUs and steam DeoVR 8.55) ...

Karlson Сould you provide more details regarding your video? is it 8 or 10 bit video? do you have the HVEC codec installed? Have you tried turning on the Unity player in the settings?

Hey bobo, mine DeoVR problems just magically disappeared !!
Just disable both "Alternative Method" and "DirectShow", enable the "Unity Player" in "Developer option", tell me if it works for you. 😉
