Hi creators,
I’m planning a short VR180 product-detail experiment and would value some practical advice before shooting.
The subject combines matte black accessories with polished chains. In regular ecommerce photos, frontal light can flatten the dark material, while stronger light can clip the metal highlights. I want to compare:
- A large soft frontal key
- A 45-degree key with low fill
- A 45-degree key with a narrow rim light
The plan is to use a locked camera, slow subject rotation, and the same exposure and working distance for each setup. The purpose is to learn which setup preserves depth and material separation in a headset.
A few questions for experienced VR180 creators:
- Would you expose for the reflective metal and lift the blacks in post, or protect the black texture in-camera?
- What camera-to-subject distance feels most natural for small product details in VR180?
- For a mostly static comparison, is 8K/60 worth the extra bitrate, or would 8K/30 be enough?
These are the reference pieces and their current flat photos:

Disclosure: I work on the Lunarness project. I’m sharing the link so the materials and original 2D presentation can be evaluated openly.
After filming, I’ll upload the DeoVR comparison here and share the exact camera, lighting, and export settings.
